Watched the Hall of Fame Classic tournament this week and it more than lived up to expectations. 4 top ranked teams squared off, 3 of them undefeated. It was really fun to watch, as often your better teams have a lot of blowout victories, and it was very interesting to see how some of the top girls teams and players in the state match up when faced with equal talent. In the first round Brownsburg held undefeated Jeffersonville to only 32 points in the opening game, then 3A #2 ranked Evansville Memorial knocked off 4A #2 Carmel 57-48. Then Jeffersonville came back in the consolation and steamrolled Carmel 56-28, while Brownsburg beat Memorial 51-41 to win the championship. All 4 teams were very well coached, and it was interesting watching each team try to control the tempo to suit their favored style of play. Memorial and Jeff were both able to shut down Carmels perimeter and transition game, while Carmel couldn't handle Memorials inside game and let Jeff get into their run and gun. Brownsburg won by focusing on defense - completely shutting down both Jeff and Memorials inside game. It kind of reminded me of that old saying "offense sells tickets - defense wins games"
All 4 teams were loaded with great talent, size, and athleticism, including several D1 signees and top prospects.
The All Tournament team consisted of:
Stephanie Mavunga - 6'2"" Sophomore Center from Brownsburg. Was tournament MVP and well deserved.
Mallory Ladd - 6'1" Senior Forward from Evansville Memorial - signed with Valparaiso
Natalie Cohlmeyer - 5'9" Junior Point Guard from Evansville Memorial.
Lakin Roland - 6'1" Junior Forward from Jeffersonville
Jalynn McClain - 5'11" Junior Forward from Jeffersonville
Torrie Thornton - 6"1" Senior Wing from Carmel- signed with Purdue
Overall just a great day of Indiana basketball!
